Baking Soda - cleans, grit for scrubbing, deodorizes, softens water, scours, neutralizes acid, extinguishes grease fires, cleans aluminum, chrome, stainless steel, softens fabrics, and also works as an underarm deodorant, toothpaste or in shoes as a deordorizer.

Soap - Sunlight Bar Soap or Fels Naptha soap. Avoid using soaps which contain petroleum distillates.

Lemons - or bottled lemon juice works just as well. Lemons cut grease, removes stains from aluminum, clothes and cleans glass.

Borax - cleans, deodorizes, disinfects bleaches, softens water, cleans wallpaper, painted walls and floors and great for laundry mixes. Borax also inhibits the growth of mold. Kills ants and cockroaches when mixed with icing sugar.

White Vinegar - disinfects and breaks up dirt, cuts grease, removes mildew, odors, some stains and wax build-up. Vinegar dissolves mineral deposits and polishes some metals. Great in the rinse cycle for removing any soap and makes wool blankets soft.

Washing Soda - Washing soda cuts grease, removes stains, softens water, cleans walls, tiles, sinks and tubs and also helps to unblock pipes. Gloves should be used when cleaning with washing soda. Washing soda is a great general cleaner. Cuts grease on broiler pans and in ovens.

Hydrogen Peroxide - disinfects and bleaches

Isopropyl Alcohol - is an excellent disinfectant. (It has been suggested to replace this with ethanol or 100 proof alcohol in solution with water. There is some indication that isopropyl alcohol buildup contributes to illness in the body.

Cornstarch - can be used to clean windows, polish furniture, shampoo carpets and rugs.

Citrus Solvent - cleans paint brushes, oil and grease, some stains.

Trisodium phosphate (TSP) - a mixture of soda ash and phosphoric acid. TSP is toxic if swallowed, but it can be used on many jobs, such as cleaning drains or removing old paint, that would normally require much more caustic and poisonous chemicals, and it does not create any fumes.

Olive oil: picks up dirt and polishes wood. Cheap olive oil works just as well as the expensive brands.
